Toxicology

ATL toxicology activities are led by two PhD toxicologists with over 60 years of combined experience. They are experienced in assessing and analyzing potential health risks associated with exposures to chemical substances. They are accomplished researchers, having conducted numerous toxicity tests for government and industry sponsors. They have developed exposure limits for government clients and published papers describing methodologies used in developing those exposure limits. They are supported by junior and mid-level staff with backgrounds in chemistry, biology, and industrial hygiene. This group:

  • Investigates the most current toxicological literature and search databases for new and updated data.
  • Interprets the results of toxicity tests and make recommendations for limiting exposures based on the toxicity data.
  • Uses toxicity data to develop various limits for chemical exposures.
  • Critically evaluates the results of toxicity tests to determine their applicability for use in industry and government programs.
  • Evaluates the results of toxicity studies utilizing various routes of exposure to determine how the results can be extrapolated to human exposure scenarios.
  • Summarizes available toxicological data and effectively communicate the potential risks associated with exposures to those chemicals.
  • Assesses the potential for harmful health effects from combinations of chemicals.
  • Uses scientific judgment to support clients in policy- and decision-making.
  • Evaluates the adequacy of existing published exposure limits (e.g., TLV-STEL, IDLH) to emergency planning.
  • Evaluates existing literature describing sources, fate, transformation and effects of toxic substances and extrapolate those data to potential risks to human health and the environment.
  • Uses chemical structure relationships and mechanisms of toxicity to extrapolate the relative toxic effects of one chemical onto a chemically similar substance.
  • Analyzes raw exposure data to identify existing or potential trends.
  • Conducts statistical analysis of archived or current data to determine statistical and/or clinical significance and to predict likely outcomes or trends.

Dr. Doug Craig
Dr. Doug Craig is a senior toxicologist with many years of experience assessing and analyzing potential risks associated with human exposures to chemical hazards in the environment. He has developed exposure limits for emergency planning and response purposes and published several papers describing methodologies used. Currently he supports the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) developing protective action criteria and is currently active on a number of DOE subcommittees and working groups. Earlier in his career he was Principal Investigator on animal toxicology research and testing for government and industry sponsors, including several National Toxicology Program studies.

Dr. Jayne-Anne Bond
Dr. Jayne-Anne Bond is an environmental toxicologist with experience analyzing potential health risks associated with exposures to chemical substances. She was a toxicologist for the state of Texas where she reviewed and analyzed air permit applications, modeling data, and accidental release data for potential human health risks. Her background includes regulatory toxicology with knowledge of federal regulations governing air, water, and waste, as well as research. She currently supports the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in their development of protective action criteria and is currently active on a number of DOE subcommittees and working groups.
